Around 25,000 residences in south-east Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after powerful weather events passed over the region, generating powerful gusts topping 109 kilometers per hour.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Widespread Destruction

Homeowners reported large ice chunks measuring up to seven centimeters in some areas. Meteorological experts announced that various areas across Queensland had been impacted by substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing electricity service throughout the affected regions, with dozens of response units deployed to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Storm Challenges

At the same time, around one thousand households in the southern state also experienced electricity disruptions after Melbourne saw its heaviest rainfall in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams received 598 emergency reports across the area, primarily for structural issues but also for fallen timber and inundation.

At one point on Sunday, in excess of 28k energy customers in the state were experiencing outages.

Climate Outlook

Damp conditions were expected to linger along much of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

Tuesday was predicted as the most rainy day, with continued storm activity anticipated across multiple regions of both states.

Medical Alert

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the state's northern country region, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after previous incidents where analogous circumstances led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
